Dave Cover: This is Christian Meditation for A Bigger Life. I'm Dave Cover. I want to help you with Christian meditation and experience God's presence through biblically guided imagination, where you can draw near to God and get the stress and anxiety out of your mind, out of your heart, and out of your body so you can live a bigger life. If your podcast app is set to skip silent sections disable that now in your podcast app. To begin, life flat on your back, if you can. Otherwise, sit comfortably in a chair and uncross your legs, and if possible, close your eyes. Take in a deep belly breath through your nose, and send the air into your belly, using your stomach muscles to make your belly rise. Hold it for just a few seconds and then slowly exhale. And as you do, say to yourself, relax and focus on feeling your whole body relax. Get a slow rhythm of breathing going. In through your nose into your belly. And then as you exhale, try to soften the muscles all throughout your body a little bit more each time, and try to focus your mind on feeling your body relax. Use your sense of imagination, as if your mind is going within your body, to feel your body from within. Try to direct your mind's focus on feeling the presence of your body. If your mind drifts into other thoughts, just gently bring it back to feeling your body. You're reintegrating your body with your mind so keep your minds focus directed at feeling your body. Breathing in, in through your nose into your belly, and slowly breathing out, letting your out breath be a little longer than your intake. And each time feeling your body drop become heavier. Being pulled down by gravity. Your muscles softening. Let's focus on feeling the top of your head, your scalp, and just focus on releasing any tension in the top of your scalp. Letting muscles soften. And move that focus now down to your forehead, releasing any tightness in your forehead, the sides of your head. Letting go of tension. Your eyebrows, eyelids, around your eyes, behind your eyes, letting the muscles around your eyes release, unwind, relax. Let your eyes lie there in their sockets. Now focus on your cheeks, letting go. Let your cheeks drop, soften, release, be held down by gravity. Relax. Now into your jaw, letting your jaw drop and focus on your face feeling relaxed, releasing, dropping tension. You don't have to hold your face up. You don't have to present a face to the world right now. Just let your face fall. Your jaw, your bottom teeth, separate from your top teeth. And now focus on your tongue. One big muscle that goes all the way back, deep into your throat. Focus on letting that completely go release. Relax. Hard to do it first, but try to do that. Try to let it just completely drop. And as it does, you'll notice your entire face now feels much more relaxed. Focus on that feeling, experience it. And now the back of your head. Feeling the back of your head release tension. Let go. Soften. Moving down to your neck, all around your neck, and now into your shoulders. Both shoulder blades, just let them drop toward the ground. Lots of people put tension in their shoulders. Back of their neck. If you do, see if you can let that go. Release, soften. And now moving your attention down your arms, past your elbow, into your wrists, hands, fingers, and thumbs, and focus on feeling your arms relax. Drop. Become heavy. They're not doing anything right now. They're just lying there. Letting go. Focus on both arms. Now, bring your awareness to your arms, shoulders, neck, and head. Just feeling your head, your neck, your shoulders, your arms, completely relax. Lying there, letting go, softening. Your hands, your head, arms, shoulders, neck. Now, bring your awareness down to your back. Your upper back, lower back, and letting your back completely soften. Feeling it let go. Feeling it become heavy. Now, around to your belly, your abdomen, your stomach muscles, letting them release any tension you are holding in your gut. Your stomach muscles are a place that we often put the more visceral anxiety that we're feeling. See if you can focus on just letting that release, soften, let go. Now, into your chest, same thing, and feel your whole torso become heavy. Released. Now, your hips. Relaxing your hips, releasing your hips. We don't usually think of our hips as needing to be relaxed, but it is a place we often hold a guarded tension. See if you can soften your hips, relax your hips, release your pelvic area. Now, down to your thighs and feeling your thighs become very heavy. Being pulled down by gravity, completely letting go, softening. Your thigh muscles are extremely heavy. Let them feel heavy, being held down by gravity. Your knees, your calves, shins, your ankles. Now, your feet, toes. Feeling the mass of your feet. You may not have relaxation issues there, but just feel your feet. Now, feel both legs, ankles, and feet. If your brain is favoring your right leg or your left leg, try to focus on the other one as well and feel both legs equally. Feeling your legs relax, limp, heavy, loose, like wet noodles. Just lying there, no structure holding them up, feeling both legs and feet and now feeling your whole body, your arms, your legs, your torso, shoulders, your head. Feel your whole body all at once and use your imagination to feel your body becoming like water flowing downstream, completely relaxed. Let go, softened like water, and feel that. Keep your mind's attention on feeling that. God created you as a being of imagination. Your imagination empowers your strongest desires and fears, and your imagination is always affecting your body's physiology and chemistry. God created you as a being of imagination. Your imagination empowers your strongest desires and fears, and your imagination is always affecting your body's physiology and chemistry. Your body is always responding one way or the other to your imagination. As an example, try this. Imagine holding a grapefruit in your hand and imagine taking a knife and cutting it in half. Noticing the textures and scents, bring it up to your nose, imagine smelling it. Imagine squeezing the tart pink juice into a glass and raising the glass to your mouth. Imagine inhaling the citrus scent and imagine taking a big mouthful of grapefruit juice. Imagine the taste and the texture on your tongue. The bittersweet juice, the pulp. My guess is right now, your mouth is watering as if the experience were really happening. In response to mental images, your brains smell and taste centers are activated, triggering the real physiological response of saliva, but there's no grapefruit. You're not eating grapefruit right now, but your imagination of the reality of it is putting that reality into your body. And it's the same way when our mind is able to imagine unseen spiritual realities. When we are able to imagine the reality of God's presence and love in us and around us, our body will have a physiological response to that reality. And that's the antidote to our other imaginations of insecurities and fears and worries and anger fantasies that are causing a physiological response in our body. That's why the Bible gives us powerful imagery, words to activate our imagination, to alter the activity of our brain's fight or flight, anxiety and stress. So learning to imagine biblical spiritual realities will affect your body's physiology. Let's try this. Let me read John, chapter seven, verse 38, where Jesus says," Whoever believes in me, as scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them." And then the apostle John goes on to write," By this he meant the spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive." Up to that time, the spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. In other words, Jesus' resurrection and ascension into heaven is what allows his spirit to inhabit his people as his body. These are spiritual realities we're not really going to understand, but we in some way can experience them by imagination. Focus your mind on feeling your whole body from within. Imagine and feel God's spirit, flowing like living water within your entire body. God's life. God's light. God's power and glory. God's love. His very presence flowing up and down your spine and flowing through your veins throughout your entire body. Imagine your whole body being one with God's life giving, light giving power. Imagine God focused on you right now with his infinite and intimate love and wisdom by his spirit flowing throughout your entire body. Jesus said," Whoever believes in me, rivers of living water will flow from within them." And by this he meant the spirit, John says. So say quietly to yourself," The spirit of God is in me right now. I am calm and confident in his presence and care." Imagine and feel this reality all throughout your body. In this moment, whoever believes in me, rivers of living water will flow from within them. Feel that. Jesus is giving you this to imagine so imagine it. Rivers of living water of his holy spirit flowing within your body. Jesus says," This is reality. An unseen reality that you are to experience by your imagination." Rivers of living water flowing throughout your entire body. Jesus said," Whoever believes in me, rivers of living water will flow from within them," by this he meant the spirit. So imagine stress and anxiety and insecurity and tension and even pain draining out of your body like a liquid. Flowing out of your feet, down into the ground, all being replaced by the rivers of living water flowing within you. The water of the spirit of God flowing from within you, replacing stress and anxiety and insecurity and tension with the life giving power of God's spirit flowing through your veins. Flowing up and down your spine, from your brain to your sacrum, and flowing all throughout your body. Remember that neurons that fire together wire together. Your brain is constantly rewiring its synapses and neurons and neurons that fire together wire together. So make it a habit of feeling your body and also feeling God's presence in your body at the same time, god's spirit flowing within you, using your imagination. But your body is always responding to your imagination, you're just imagining something that's very real. Jesus said something similar when he was speaking to the woman by the well. In John 4: 14, Jesus said," The water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life." This is something very similar to what he said in John seven," The image of the spirit of God being a river of living water or a spring of water welling up to eternal life." Jesus gives us this powerful imagination, his spirit like rivers of water, like Springs of water, flowing within us, flowing throughout our body, and welling up to eternal life. So imagine this, feel it into your body right now, the spirit of God being a spring of water, a river of water in you, that is welling up in you as eternal life. This is an image Jesus wants you to imagine as an unseen reality within you. So imagine it, the spirit of God flowing within you, like rivers of living water. The spirit of God welling up within you, within your body, like a spring of water of life. Feel this flowing all throughout your body, replacing stress and tension with a transcendent presence of God's peace. Replacing anxiety with the calm confidence of God's presence within you. Replacing fear and insecurity with the renewing strength of God's eternal life. Replacing anger with the softening assurance of God's love. Imagine this, feel this, rest in this, let go of all anxiety and stress and tension and worry and insecurity and anger and let all of that flow out of you, as God's spirit flows like rivers of life giving water and love and God's presence throughout your entire body. Your body is a temple of God's holy spirit flowing within you. Feel this using your imagination. The God who created this universe is flowing through your body right now, welling up to eternal life, bringing his life into your whole body, into your whole life, giving you life. In this present moment right now and in every present moment, Jesus is saying to you," Whoever believes in me, rivers of living water will flow from within them." By this he meant the spirit, so in this present moment, focus your mind on feeling your body and also feeling God's presence in your body at the same time. God's spirit, flowing within you, like rivers of living water. Jesus said," The water I give them will become in them, a spring of water welling up to eternal life." God's spirit in you, in your body, as a spring of water, welling up all throughout your body, bringing God's power and God's glory, God's presence and love, and God's renewal in life, welling up to eternal life in you in your body. You are your body. You're more than your body, but when God made you, he made your body and his spirit is in you in your body as a temple. It's what the Bible says. And because God's spirit of life is in you, the forever God is your God forever, because his spirit of life is in your body right now. Your body is holy and your body will rise, even from the dead, in power and glory and spiritual ability and immortality. And you can feel this into your body, even right now, in this present moment. So using your biblically guided imagination, take Jesus' words into your imagination and feel this into your body right now," Whoever believes in me, rivers of living water will flow within them. The water I give them will become in them, a spring of water welling up to eternal life." By this, he meant the spirit, John says. God is present. He is in you, and you can trust him because the forever God is your God forever.
