The summary for this episode is: <p>The Bible’s contrast is never between Heaven and Hell. It’s between Heaven and Earth. Dave Cover: This is Christian Meditation for A Bigger Life. I'm Dave Cover. I want to help you with Christian meditation and experience God's presence through biblically guided imagination, where you can draw near to God and get the stress and anxiety out of your mind, out of your heart and out of your body so you can live a bigger life Before we begin, if your podcast app is set to skip silent sections, disable that now, because we want to use silence as an important part of our meditation. In a minute, I'm going to read a few verses from Colossians three to meditate on. But before that, let's get your body in a good physical and spiritual disposition to meditate so that you can recalibrate your body and mind with God's infinite wonder and intimate presence and love for you right now in this moment. Lie flat on your back, or sit comfortably in a chair, uncross your legs and close your eyes if you can. And when you're ready, begin by taking in deep breaths into your belly, intentionally making your belly rise with each breath intake. And then with each exhale, focus on letting all your muscles soften and let go of tension. Try to bring your mind's awareness to feeling your entire body feeling heavier all at once. Feeling your whole body, just releasing and letting go of holding yourself up. You don't have to hold yourself up right now. You can let go. Release. This feeling is a sensation that you actually can feel. It's like when your body feels cold, you feel that sensation inside your body. This is like that, although it's a quieter sensation. You have to focus more on feeling this sensation, of relaxing your body and feeling your body relax. Like a feedback loop, focus on feeling this sensation in your entire body, all at once, right now. Feeling your body, feeling relaxed, more and more Taking deep breaths in, making your belly rise with each intake. And then with each exhale, breathing relaxation into your body and feeling your body relax. Let's take some time to focus your mind on specific parts of your body. Let's begin by bringing your mind's awareness to your legs, both your legs, your thighs, your knees, your calves, feel how your legs are in parallel with one another. Feel them both at the same time. Now bring your awareness to your feet, both feet at the same time, tops of your feet, bottoms, your ankles, toes. Feel all 10 toes. Now feel your legs and your feet and your toes all at once. According to certain books, I've read by various neuroscientists, this puts your brain in a unique wavelength that is highly therapeutic to your central nervous system. And it kind of reintegrates your body with your mind. So we take time to do this, and then we will meditate on God's word and imagine and feel the spiritual reality of God's word into your body. Over the years, I've found this to be a very effective way of experiencing God's transcendent presence and intimate love. With practice over time, this will get easier and you will get good at it and it will change your life. Now bring your attention to your hips. Feeling both hips, relaxing, letting go of your hips, letting them fall to the ground, your pelvic area. Now up to your belly, your abdomen, letting go tension in your abdomen, letting your muscles release, taking in deep breaths and feeling your belly rise. And then as you exhale, letting your belly relax, letting go of tension, clenched muscles. Now move your attention to your chest. Letting go of tension. Now around to your back, just letting the muscles in your back release. Let go. And now feeling your entire torso letting go, your pelvic area, your hips, your belly, your chest, your back. Now focusing on your shoulders, tops of your shoulders and your shoulder blades, releasing tension, letting go. Now bringing your awareness down your arms, both arms, just letting your arms completely let go and relax. Feel your arms in parallel with one another and parallel with your body. Feel your arms and your legs at the same time, relaxing. Letting go of clenched muscles. Just falling to the ground. Just lying there. Not having to lift anything, do anything. Completely relaxed. Now your hands, your fingers, focus on feeling your legs and your arms and your hands and your feet at the same time. Now moving up your neck, the back of your neck, up the back of your head, and just imagine the back of your head letting go of tension. Just releasing all effort. The top of your head, releasing all effort, letting go of tension. The sides of your head and your ears. Now your forehead. If your forehead is holding tension, just let it go. Release. Relax. Your eyebrows, your eyelids. Now the muscles around your eyes, behind your eyes, letting your eyes sink deep into their sockets. For some reason, we hold a lot of tension in our eyes. You can tell when somebody is tense by looking at their eyes, just imagine you letting your eyes completely go. Relax, release tension and stress. Now your cheeks. You don't have to hold yourself up, you don't have to present a face to the world right now, just let it go. Your jaw. Releasing your jaw, your tongue. Your tongue is one big muscle going all the way back into your throat. Just let it release. Let it fall. Let it go. Now think of your head, your hands and your feet at the same time. Relaxing. Try to keep your head, your hands and your feet in your mind. At the same time, holding your mind's awareness on both feet, both hands and your head, releasing and letting go. Just feeling them with your mind. Now, feeling your arms and your legs at the same time with your hands and your feet and your head. Feeling your body, feeling relaxed. Continue your slow, deep breaths, and just bring your mind's awareness to feeling your entire body all at once. Use your imagination to feel your body from within as if your mind is going within your body and feeling your body from the inside. Now, while keeping part of your attention always on feeling your body, let me read Colossians three versus one through four." Since then, you have been raised with Christ. Set your hearts on things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory." And so much of this is imaginative language, it's almost all imagination. The Bible's binary contrast is never between heaven and hell. Somehow we've made it that culturally, but that's never what the Bible does. The Bible's binary contrast is between heaven and earth. And that contrast began when Adam and Eve, Hebrew words given as names for human in life. When Adam and Eve were banned from Eden, which was heaven on earth meant to fill the earth with God's flourishing presence. And they were left outside in the thorns and thistles, in the dust and death of heaven's leaving the earth of Eden leaving the earth. Later in the old Testament, the tabernacle and later the temple became little physical embassies of heaven on earth, physical places of God's presence on earth. In the new Testament, God has said to have become human flesh, a human body, and dwelt among us. That Greek word means tabernacled among us. Jesus was a temple. It says in John one 14," Jesus was the very physical embodiment of heaven on earth again." Later in the new Testament, the holy spirit indwells Jesus' followers, as they, as their bodies become physical temples of the holy spirit, embodied physical places of heaven on earth. This is what you are. This is what your body is as a follower of Jesus. Remember first Corinthians six, 19 and 20 says," Do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy spirit within you whom you have from God?" Verse 20," So glorify God in your body." It's an amazing verse with lots of imagination. Such a powerful truth and a powerful imagination. Let's just take a moment right now and imagine this reality and feel it into your body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy spirit within you, whom you have from God. So glorify God in your body. Your body is a physical presence of heaven on earth just like the temple was in the old Testament. Feel this right now into your body as you continue your breathing. Imagine this, your body is a temple of the holy spirit within you. Your body is meant to glorify God as a physical embassy of heaven on earth. Imagine this, feel this. Your body is a temple of God's holy spirit within you. Your body is a temple of heaven on earth. Feel that in your entire body all at once. So coming back to Colossians three versus one and two," Since then, you have been raised with Christ. Set your hearts on things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." This is talking about heaven and earth as realms, not places. So Colossians three, five, just a few verses down says," Put to death therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature." That's the exact same Greek word construction as verse two, about not unearthly things. So this is what Paul means by earthly things, sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed. So let me read the verse again," Put to death therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature, sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed. These are earthly realm, as opposed to heavenly realm desires, set your hearts."" Seeing with the eyes of your heart," as Paul says in Ephesians one 18," Your imagination. The eyes of your heart envision with your imagination heavenly reality, so that you can experience this reality in your heart and mind and body where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. You have been raised with Christ." This is always how your life works. Your mind is always imagining certain realities or un- realities. And that imagination is what drives your desires and therefore your decisions in life. This is how we were created to be people with powerful imaginations that can actually see unseen realities and then create them or experience them. In Genesis one, the very first chapter of the Bible, God, first imagines, and then makes it so. And he created us in his image to be the same way. But sin, earth without heaven desires of sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, greed, sin hijacks and captures our imagination. And this capturing of our imagination is what ultimately creates your anxieties, stress, worries, insecurities, evil desires, greed, lusts, fears. You're trying to live in unreality. You live inside God's universe. These hijacked imaginations enter and affect your body in real ways because it causes your life to be incongruent with reality, the reality of God's universe. But Christian meditation allows you to recalibrate your life with reality by giving you powerful images and imaginations of God's word given to you by his holy spirit. By learning to use your biblically guided imagination, you can experience unseen realities and actually feel these realities into your body and into your life in a way that powerfully shapes your desires and your decisions in life changing ways. Remember what Paul writes in Galatians two 20," I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the son of God who loved me and gave himself for me." So while keeping part of your attention always on feeling this into your body, remember, you have been crucified with Christ and you no longer live, but Christ lives in you. Now you do live, but you've been crucified with Christ in a new you with Christ, a real you, an eternal you, the you that comes from your creator and the creator of this entire universe is now alive in your body. The life you now live in the body, you live by faith in Christ who loved you and gave himself for you. Imagine this and feel this reality into your body right now. So we come back to Colossians three, you have been raised with Christ for you died. Remember, you've been crucified with Christ. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. So while keeping part of your attention always on feeling this into your body. Let me read it again and notice all the times it says, you. You have been raised with Christ for you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. So imagine this, your life, your identity, the real and eternal you has already died and has been risen with Christ and is safe and secure and hidden with Christ in God. This is imagination, but it's meant to give you an unseen reality to experience through your imagination. Imagine for a moment what it would be like to really believe this. Think about this reality and feel this right now into your body. Your life, your identity, the real and eternal you has already died with Christ and has been risen with Christ and is kept safe and secure and hidden with Christ in God. Feel this truth into your body. Imagine this reality. The Bible has these multi- layered images for us to imagine so that we can experience spiritual, unseen transcendent realities right now, in this moment. In this moment, we connect with God. Right now. So using your biblically guided imagination, feel these realities into your body right now. You have been crucified with Christ. You have died and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. You have been raised with Christ. Christ is your life. Christ lives in you. The life you now live in the body, Christ lives in you in your body with you. You will appear with Christ in glory when he returns and brings heaven back to earth. Imagine this and feel this reality into your entire body all at once right now. You have been crucified with Christ. You have died and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. You have been raised with Christ. Christ is your life. Christ lives in you, in your body. You will appear with Christ in glory when he returns and brings heaven back to earth. Feel this in your head, in your feet, in your hands at the same time. Feel this in your legs and arms at the same time. Feel this in your entire body, all at once. Let me pray. Heavenly father, I thank you that I have already in a very real way been raised with Christ. Jesus' resurrection is my resurrection. I've already in some real way that I don't quite understand, but it's true because you say it's true. I've already been raised with Christ. I'm already where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. I have already died with Christ. I've been crucified with Christ. And my life is now hidden with Christ in you. Christ is my life. And when he appears, I will appear with him in glory. And so I live by faith in you. In my body, Christ in my body. And I live by faith in you who loved me and gave yourself for me so I can trust you. I can trust your love for me, your intimate and infinite love for me. I can always trust in your presence in me and with me because I am always with Christ and Christ is always living in me, with me. I am never alone. I am always with you and you are always with me. And the forever God is my God forever. And I give thanks to you for this reality, this truth that I can experience right now with you in Jesus name. Amen. DESCRIPTION

The Bible’s contrast is never between Heaven and Hell. It’s between Heaven and Earth. That contrast began when Adam and Eve (Hebrew for Human and Life) were banned from Eden (Heaven on Earth meant the fill the Earth), and they were left outside in the thorns and thistles and dust and death of Heaven’s absence from the Earth.

Later in the OT, the tabernacle and later the Temple became little embassies of Heaven on Earth. Physical places of God’s presence on Earth. In the NT, God is said to have become flesh and tabernacled among us (John 1:14). Jesus was the very physical embodiment of Heaven on Earth. Later in the NT, the Holy Spirit indwells Jesus’s followers as they/their bodies become Temples of the Holy Spirit — embodied, physical places of Heaven on Earth. This is what YOU are — your body is — as a follower of Jesus!

Remember…

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 ESV

…Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? … So glorify God in your body.

Colossians 3:1-4 (NIV)

1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

So…

Colossians 3:1-2 (NIV)

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

Colossians 3:5 NIV

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

These are Earth without Heaven desires.

Set your hearts… seeing with the eyes of your heart (Eph 1:18) – your imagination. Envision with your imagination so that you can experience this reality in your heart and mind and body.

This is always how your life works. Your mind is always imagining certain realities or unrealities – and that imagination is what drives your desires and therefore your decisions in your life. This is how we were created — to be people with powerful imaginations that can actually see unseen realities and then create them or experience them. In Genesis 1, God first imagines and then makes it so. And he created us in his image to be the same way. But sin — Earth without Heaven desires of sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed — hijacks and captures our imagination. This is what creates your anxieties. Stress. Worries. Insecurities. Fears. These imaginations enter and affect your body in real ways.

But Christian meditation allows us to recalibrate our lives with the powerful images and imaginations of God's word given to us by his Holy Spirit. By learning to use our biblically guided imagination we can experience unseen realities and actually feel these realities in our bodies and in our lives in a way that shapes our desires and our decisions in powerful ways. Life-changing ways.

Remember…

Galatians 2:20 (NIV)

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

The Bible has these multilayered images for us to imagine so that we can experience transcendent realities now, in this moment.

Using your biblically-guided imagination, feel these realities into your body right now:

  • You have been crucified with Christ.
  • You have died and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
  • You have been raised with Christ.
  • Christ is your life.
  • Christ lives in you — the life you now live in the body.
  • You will appear with Christ in glory when he returns and brings Heaven back to Earth.
